Are you considering a tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, in Rancho Cucamonga to tighten and sculpt your midsection? This transformative procedure removes excess skin and fat, reduces stretch marks, and provides a lifted, natural-looking belly button we call the Inland Innie™. A tummy tuck can also repair diastasis recti (abdominal muscle separation), which offers cosmetic and medical benefits—such as supporting a more active lifestyle, reducing lower back pain, and decreasing urinary incontinence.

A tummy tuck consultation is a very important part of the journey: it is an opportunity to sit down with your potential cosmetic surgeon to share your goals, hear their professional opinion, and then together develop a treatment plan that will safely transform your shape.

To get the most out of your appointment, the surgeons at Inland Cosmetic Surgery are sharing 6 key questions you should ask during your abdominoplasty consultation, along with advice to help you get the very best tummy tuck results.

  1. Which tummy tuck procedure is right for me?
  2. What are the risks and complications of tummy tuck surgery?
  3. How should I prepare for tummy tuck surgery?
  4. How can I get the best tummy tuck results?
  5. Where will my tummy tuck scars be?
  6. When will I see tummy tuck results?

Which tummy tuck procedure is right for me?

Your Rancho Cucamonga tummy tuck should be personalized based on your unique anatomy to safely achieve your aesthetic goals—techniques range from minimally invasive correction of a lower belly “pooch” to highly transformative reshaping of the entire midsection. During your consultation, your tummy tuck surgeon should explain which of the following techniques will be ideal for addressing your concerns and achieving the natural-looking results you are seeking:

  • Mini tummy tuck is a good choice for patients who have a small amount of excess fat and skin below the belly button, but have good underlying muscle tone and need minimal or no muscle separation repair. The belly button is not disturbed with this technique and good candidates have a shorter scar and recovery period.
  • Full tummy tuck is the most common tummy tuck technique; it removes skin and fat from the entire midsection and repairs diastasis recti. This technique also reduces stretch marks and improves the appearance of the belly button. A second incision is made around your belly button to provide a beautiful, natural-looking placement of the naval. This technique is often recommended for patients who have had children or have lost a moderate amount of weight.
  • Extended tummy tuck can help patients who have lost a significant amount of weight via diet & exercise or weight loss surgery. Good candidates for extended tummy tuck typically need abdominal muscle separation repair and have excess skin that extends beyond the hips bones; patients may also have loose skin in the thighs, pubic area, and other parts of the lower body. As with a fully tummy tuck, the belly button is revised and repositioned for a naturally lifted appearance.

Additionally, liposuction is almost always employed during a tummy tuck procedure to help refine your new contours and reduce the chance of seroma development after surgery. Abdominoplasty can also be combined with breast surgery; the combination of tummy tuck with breast enhancement is often called a “mommy makeover.”

How to explain your tummy tuck goals

Many patients aren’t sure how to articulate their goals during their tummy tuck consultation—they just know they want to see improvement in their midsection. To help you communicate what your aesthetic vision is, take some time to browse through before and after galleries with the goal of finding patients with similar anatomy to yours and who have results you’d like to achieve as well.

Showing photos of results you like will go far in helping your surgeon understand your expectations and help them personalize your look to appear as natural as possible. Tip: Pay attention to the details in before and after photos: one of the keys to a completely natural-looking tummy tuck result is in the belly button

What are the risks and complications of tummy tuck surgery?

While it may be tempting to only focus on the positives—like how tummy tuck surgery will help you look and feel better, it is important to discuss any risks and complications with your surgeon.

Tummy tuck risks and complications may include:

  • Bleeding
  • Infection
  • Seroma
  • Poor wound healing
  • Excessive scarring
  • Skin and fat necrosis
  • Adverse reactions to anesthesia

To minimize tummy tuck risks and complications, we recommend choosing a highly-experienced cosmetic surgeon who is a diplomate of the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery (ABCS). Board certified specialty surgeons have typically had a year or more of fellowship training and are rigorously tested to further prove their expertise; you can also count on these doctors to utilize the most advanced techniques and equipment, and operate in an accredited surgical suite.

The importance of reviewing your medical history

The goal of reviewing your medical history is to minimize any potential complications and help you enjoy optimal results. It is in fact critical to your safety that you are completely honest and disclose all pertinent information, including:

  • Family medical history
  • Medications you take (or have recently)
  • Any recreational drugs you use
  • Past surgeries or procedures (even non-surgical procedures)
  • Your diet and exercise routine
  • Other habits like smoking or drinking

This information gives your surgeon a comprehensive understanding of your unique physiology and plays a crucial role in determining if you are a good candidate for an Inland Empire tummy tuck, and how your cosmetic surgeon can achieve the results you are looking for with the least amount of risk.

How should I prepare for tummy tuck surgery?

To have a smooth recovery and enjoy beautiful, long-lasting tummy tuck results, it is critical to avoid substances that can negatively affect your outcome—as well as follow best practices afterward, including being proactive about nutrition and scar care.

The best Rancho Cucamonga cosmetic surgeons will take plenty of time to go over a full list of pre-operative preparations and vital post-operative instructions with you; following is a preview of things they may suggest.

Planning ahead for tummy tuck surgery

Schedule your tummy tuck once you have maintained a healthy, stable weight you are happy with for at least 6 months; you should also be done having children. (Experiencing weight changes or pregnancy is safe after a tummy tuck, but can diminish your results.)

It’s absolutely critical to stop smoking/vaping at least 4 weeks before you plan to have surgery (and for at least 4 weeks after), to minimize the risks of complications and tissue damage. Beyond abstaining from smoking, be sure to strictly follow the list of medications and substances to avoid provided by your tummy tuck surgeon—you will see it includes things that are seemingly healthy, but which can thin the blood or interfere with healing processes (green tea is one example).

You will need help with transportation while you are on pain meds and limited in your movements: it is likely to be a few weeks before you are cleared to drive. If you have small children, you will also need to arrange for childcare support for up to 3 weeks, as you will not be able to lift anything over 5-10 lbs during that time.

You will need to plan 4-8 weeks off of physically demanding jobs. If you work at a desk job, you can return to a normal routine more quickly, but even for those who work from home, at least one week off is typically required.

Before having surgery, make sure your space is ready to go: special pillows, entertainment, and loose clothing will all help ease the first week or two after surgery. Additionally, pick up any prescriptions your surgeon wants you to take during recovery.

Lastly, you’ll help yourself heal more quickly if you nourish your body with plenty of plant-based foods and lean proteins that support your body’s recovery processes, so plan ahead for what you will eat after your surgery. (We suggest patients freeze meals in ready-to-reheat portions.)

A highly-qualified cosmetic surgeon and their medical care team will schedule postoperative appointments to monitor your recovery, answer your questions, and quickly identify and address any complications that may arise.

How can I get the best tummy tuck results?

After surgery, continue following all rules about substances and activities to avoid until your surgeon gives you the all-clear. Also, heed guidelines about nutrition: healthy food will help you avoid postoperative constipation and provide important micronutrients your body depends on for healing. Many of your cosmetic surgeon’s postoperative instructions will focus on scar care; rules may include avoiding certain positions to reduce strain on incision sites and applying specialized scar care creams. While you will be encouraged to engage in light activity during recovery, don’t overdo it: rigorous exercise will be prohibited for some time

Where will my tummy tuck scars be?

Most patients will have a horizontal scar between the hips, placed just above the pubic area. This allows your abdominoplasty scar to be easily concealed with underwear or a swimsuit—the length of the scar will vary based on the amount of skin that is removed. To ensure you are comfortable with the placement, you should ask your cosmetic surgeon to show you the position and length of the scar you would need to achieve the look you desire.

With the exception of a mini tummy tuck, you will also have an additional scar inconspicuously placed within your newly sculpted and repositioned belly button. This incision allows your surgeon to trim excess skin around the naval and create a new opening for your belly button to sit in a natural, youthful position. (Here at Inland Cosmetic in Rancho Cucamonga, we are so obsessed with creating beautiful belly buttons, we trademarked our Inland Innie™ technique!)

You can avoid unattractive tummy tuck scarring by diligently following all post-surgery instructions, not straining your incisions, and using proper scar care—including protecting healing scars from the sun. Here at our Inland Empire cosmetic surgery practice, we also employ a newly developed bandage that significantly reduces the appearance of tummy tuck scars. Be patient with your scar care regimen, surgical scars can take up to two years to fade to their final appearance.

When will I see tummy tuck results?

The length of tummy tuck recovery is dependent on a number of factors, including your age, what tummy tuck technique was used, and your commitment to recovery guidelines. Typically, most patients are fully recovered and very satisfied with their results by around the 3 month mark. Because it takes time for residual swelling to subside and scars fade slowly, you will likely see further improvements for some time following surgery.

Laser skin resurfacing is one of the most effective ways to improve the skin’s appearance: it can treat a variety of skin concerns including wrinkles, acne scars, age spots, sun damage, and more—plus there are safe options for most patients, whatever your skin tone.

During treatment, laser energy of a safe wavelength is emitted in quick pulses which penetrate the surface of the skin to stimulate your body’s regenerative processes. While the procedure itself is quick and simple, laser skin resurfacing is only safe when performed by a skilled laser technician—this is because treatments must first be carefully chosen and tuned to treat your skin without causing damage. This is especially critical for patients with deeper complexions.

You should also be sure your provider uses the latest laser technology, which, thanks to more recent advancements, is both safer and more effective. One of the best non-ablative lasers is Cutera Laser Genesis, which can help accomplish your desired aesthetic goals in just a few treatments. Here, we explain this innovative laser treatment and share our expert answers to 7 laser treatment FAQs.

Conditions Cutera Laser Genesis can treat

Cutera Laser Genesis improves the appearance of more than 20 cosmetic and dermatologic concerns on the face and body, including:

  • Hyperpigmentation
  • Facial veins
  • Leg veins and vessels
  • Spider veins
  • Rosacea
  • Acne
  • Brown/age spots
  • Scars
  • Birthmarks and port wine stains
  • Fine lines and wrinkles.

Dual-laser treatment for comprehensive results

Setting Cutera Laser Genesis apart from other technology, the Excel V+ device allows your technician to combine two non-ablative lasers to target skin concerns. They can be used alone or together to synergistically achieve visible skin rejuvenation and toning.

  • The 532nm laser targets blood vessels closer to the skin and is recommended for correcting discoloration and treating facial and spider veins.
  • The 1064nm Nd: YAG laser targets deep blood vessels and darker pigmentation and is recommended for improving skin tone and texture, treating scars, and boosting collagen production.

This makes treatment choices more complex, making your choice of provider even more important. At Ahava Medspa, our highly-trained aestheticians tailor laser energy settings to achieve maximum results without compromising your tissues.

1. Is laser skin resurfacing worth it?

When compared with the cost of other treatments or skincare that claim to give similar results, laser skin resurfacing is usually “worth it.” While laser treatment is an investment, it is proven to provide quick, visible, lasting results which few non-surgical options can match.

This is because laser skin resurfacing stimulates collagen and elastin production—the proteins that keep your skin smooth and plump—and thus offers near-immediate improvement of cosmetic concerns while also continuing to support a smoother, refreshed complexion over time. For those looking to improve the appearance of cosmetic imperfections on their face and body and enhance the overall appearance of their skin without surgery or downtime, it’s usually an excellent choice.

Choosing a reputable medspa under the direction of a cosmetic surgeon will ensure you receive the most advanced, research-based treatments that have been vetted for safety and efficacy by the most knowledgeable physicians and scientists in cosmetic medicine. To further perfect treatment, check that your provider uses imaging technology, such as a VISIA Digital Skin Analysis, to examine your skin and guide you to the optimal treatments to achieve your goals.

2. Do they numb you before laser treatments?

When considering pain management for laser resurfacing, your technician will take into account the technology, treatment settings, specific area being treated, and your individual preferences. A numbing cream or gel may be applied to minimize discomfort and/or a special device tip may be used to help cool and soothe the area—with these measures, most patients report only a tolerable intermittent snapping sensation during Cutera Laser Genesis treatment.

That said, laser procedures and individual tolerances vary, so, whatever treatment you choose, never hesitate to ask a provider to pause the procedure and take further measures to increase your personal comfort.

3. Does your face peel after laser resurfacing?

Whether or not your skin will peel after laser resurfacing largely depends on the class of laser treatment you choose. Your skin is unlikely to peel after a nonablative laser treatment, but will be likely to peel after certain types of ablative laser resurfacing (there are also fractional options which treat a percentage of the skin’s surface in a pattern to reduce post-ablative laser treatment peeling). In any case, you should know exactly what will happen in advance: generally, lasers have predictable side effects that a caring technician will explain in detail prior to scheduling treatment.

Cutera Laser Genesis is considered to be non-ablative so you will not experience dramatic overall skin peeling: instead, treated brown spots will darken, come to the skin’s surface, and gradually flake off 3-5 days after treatment. This partial peeling happens because only the most highly pigmented areas of the skin will absorb the laser energy and so only skin cells that contain discoloration (i.e., age spots, freckles, etc.) are destroyed.

Patients may resume their normal routines immediately after Cutera Laser Genesis treatment; however, some patients may prefer to plan social downtime or conceal darkened spots with makeup prior to completion of the shedding process.

While laser treatment is an investment, it is proven to provide quick, visible, lasting results which few non-surgical options can match.

4. How long do the effects last?

Laser skin rejuvenation effects are long-lasting, though your skin will continue aging and new signs of aging will develop over time. Each person experiences the natural aging process differently, but typical laser effects can last anywhere from 3-5 years. Some concerns, such as scarring, are exempt from this estimation as the reduction or elimination of a scar’s appearance is permanent—the scar will not return.

5. How often should you have skin resurfacing?

Depending on the location of the desired treatment area, your skincare goals, and the level of treatment needed to achieve them, you may benefit from a series of treatments to see complete skin resurfacing results. Most patients are pleased with their improvements with just 1-2 Laser Genesis Treatments scheduled about 6 weeks apart—an additional treatment may be recommended to see optimal results for more significant cosmetic concerns. You’ll likely notice visible improvement in just a few weeks, and those effects will continue to improve over the following several months as the amplified collagen and elastin production processes are carried out.

Because laser skin resurfacing results are long-lasting, most patients only need to schedule touch-up treatments every few years to maintain a fresh appearance, or as they notice symptoms they want to address. The best way to extend the longevity of your results is to use a physician-grade sunscreen every day! This way you will be certain you are getting the advertised level of UV protection (lesser quality sunscreens do not always meet the label’s claimed protection levels).

6. Is laser resurfacing good for deep wrinkles?

Laser treatment alone will usually not erase the deepest wrinkles; these usually require additional modalities such as neurotoxin injections, dermal fillers, or a surgical lifting procedure to be significantly improved. That said, laser skin resurfacing can be an important part of an overall treatment plan to soften the appearance of deep facial wrinkles.

Lasers are best suited for treating more moderate or fine wrinkles, especially those caused by environmental factors such as sun damage; some laser systems are more effective than others at treating significant wrinkles.

  • MiXto® skin resurfacing treatments use a customizable CO2 (carbon dioxide) laser to safely heat the skin to instigate shedding of damaged outer layers. As your skin heals, new skin cells refresh the outer layers of your skin, minimizing or erasing the appearance of wrinkles and many other skin concerns.
  • ICON laser skin resurfacing treatments may also be recommended to treat deeper wrinkles. Like the Cutera Excel V+, this system offers 2 laser wavelength options to address multiple skin concerns using a single device. The IPL wavelength stimulates wound healing and reduces a number of pigmentation irregularities, while the 1540nm wavelength boosts collagen and elastin production to plump the skin, improve scars and stretch marks, and treat deeper wrinkles.

An experienced laser technician and aesthetic specialist will discuss your goals and concerns with you and examine your skin before recommending the best type of treatment to safely achieve your goals and enhance the health of your skin.

7. Are laser treatments better than BOTOX®?

Both laser skin resurfacing and BOTOX are common medspa treatment options, but they work in entirely different ways—so we would say that one is not better than the other, but rather, that it is best to take advantage of both!

Here’s how they compare. Laser treatments reduce skin imperfections by delivering targeted light energy which can be used to destroy unwanted pigment irregularities, accelerate cell turnover, and smooth the skin. In contrast, BOTOX is an injectable neurotoxin that temporarily reduces muscle contractions that cause expression lines and wrinkles.

If you are looking for a temporary treatment to soften or prevent expression-based lines and wrinkles, you will likely be pleased with BOTOX injections. If you want an overall improvement in your skin’s texture and pigmentation with long-lasting results, laser treatments are the treatment of choice. Can’t decide? You don’t have to! Many patients combine laser treatments with BOTOX injections to experience long-lasting improvement in their skin’s health and appearance. That said, we will recommend scheduling the treatments on different days and likely begin with your BOTOX treatment; this will help you see an immediate, dramatic improvement in your appearance and allow your aesthetician to tune your laser treatment to target your remaining concerns.

You may have heard that if you want transumbilical breast augmentation (TUBA) using a “belly button” incision that leaves zero breast augmentation scars, you’ll have to get saline-filled implants. For several decades, only unfilled saline breast implants were placed through a small incision in the navel, with the saline filling added through a tube after the implant shell was situated in the breast pocket—until now.

With over 20 years of experience with TUBA using saline implants, Dr. Jacob Haiavy collaborated with colleague Dr. Gabriel H. Patino to develop a technique that allows pre-filled silicone gel-filled breast implants to be placed through a belly button incision. This innovative Inland Empire breast augmentation procedure is called “TUSBA,” or “Transumbilical Silicone Breast Augmentation.”

TUSBA is cosmetic surgery history in the making

Silicone implants offer a natural look and feel that is preferred by most patients. But they have traditionally been placed through incisions on the breasts or in the underarm, since they are pre-filled and therefore seem to require a larger incision. The “scarless” transumbilical approach appeals to many patients, which left many having to choose between a concealed incision option or the natural feel of silicone implants.

After 20 years offering belly button breast augmentation, Dr. Haiavy has developed TUSBA: Transumbilical Silicone Breast Augmentation.

The option to have a transumbilical incision and silicone gel-filled implants is a significant and exciting milestone in the history of breast augmentation. Dr. Haiavy is one of three surgeons to ever place silicone implants through an incision in the navel, which can offer patients the best of both worlds—silicone and belly button incisions for ideal breast augmentation results

Transumbilical incisions help to make recovery more comfortable

A TUBA incision is not only small enough to be fully concealed within the belly button, this technique can also facilitate an easier recovery compared with traditional augmentation methods. Similar to other breast augmentation techniques, patients will experience some soreness in the breasts but minimal discomfort in the abdomen.

Transumbilical silicone breast augmentation (TUSBA) surgery is performed along the body’s natural planes

Like TUBA, TUSBA creates a tunnel from an incision discreetly placed in the belly button to the breast. A pocket is created under the chest muscle through this tunnel, the breast pocket is carefully expanded, and then the area is checked using an endoscopic camera.

After the work is carefully inspected, silicone gel implants are inserted using the Keller Funnel® No-Touch™ technique—the implant is transferred directly from its sterile packaging using a hydrated plastic funnel. This technique requires zero direct handling by the surgeon, thereby reducing the risk of infection and encouraging a smoother breast augmentation recovery.

Most breast augmentation outcomes are possible with TUSBA

To achieve safe, remarkably natural breast augmentation results, Dr. Haiavy limits TUSBA patients to a maximum breast implant volume of about 400cc, or an increase of roughly two cup sizes. Still, most patients will find that 400cc or less is a substantial enough increase to reach their desired outcome with TUSBA.

You may be a good candidate for TUSBA if you want the natural look and feel of silicone implants without visible scarring, or if you are looking to replace lost volume in the breasts after pregnancy or weight loss. You should also be a non-smoker in good health before having any surgical cosmetic procedure.

“I am thrilled to have earned membership in the ABCS,” said Dr. Ryan. “I am very grateful for the training and mentorship of Dr. Haiavy, and it is an honor to join the ranks of some of the most forward-thinking and innovative surgeons in cosmetic medicine.”

The American Board of Cosmetic Surgery (ABCS) is a prestigious organization that holds the mission of setting the highest standards for cosmetic surgery. Membership in the ABCS signals that a surgeon has demonstrated exceptional knowledge, skill, and experience in cosmetic medicine, and Dr. Ryan’s accomplishment is a testament to her commitment to providing her patients with the highest quality of care.

Dr. Ryan completed her residency in general surgery at Mountain Vista Medical Center in Phoenix, AZ, and has since dedicated her career to cosmetic surgery. After being personally selected by renowned Rancho Cucamonga cosmetic surgeon Dr. Jacob Haiavy to participate in his AACS-accredited cosmetic surgery fellowship, Dr. Ryan was invited to stay on and join Inland Cosmetic Surgery’s expert team of providers. She has performed hundreds of successful procedures and specializes in breast enhancement, body contouring, and facial rejuvenation.

“It is an honor to join the ranks of some of the most forward-thinking and innovative surgeons in cosmetic medicine.”

The ABCS requires rigorous training and testing, including a written exam, an oral exam, and the submission of a required number of case studies on a comprehensive range of surgical and non-surgical cosmetic procedures. Only a small percentage of cosmetic surgeons in the United States have achieved this distinction.

“This is a significant milestone in my career, and I am proud to be recognized for my expertise in cosmetic surgery,” says Dr. Ryan. “I am committed to providing my patients with the safest, most advanced procedures to meet their individual goals and restore their confidence.”

Dermaplaning is one of the most popular treatments we offer at Inland Cosmetic Surgery’s Ahava Medspa in Rancho Cucamonga. With immediate results and no down time, it’s easy to see why clients choose this option to instantly revive a dull complexion and reveal smoother, healthier-looking skin.

With a surgical blade and experienced eye, our highly-trained providers will gently sweep away peach fuzz and layers of dead skin cells. The radiant skin underneath will allow your skincare to penetrate deeper and for makeup to lay beautifully on the skin. This process promotes healing and increases the natural production of collagen and elastin so the skin benefits continue even after your appointment.

In this blog, we answer 9 of our patients’ most-asked questions about this popular skin treatment.

  1. Is dermaplaning painful?
  2. Is dermaplaning just shaving?
  3. Does hair grow back thicker after dermaplaning?
  4. Can I alternate microdermabrasion and dermaplaning?
  5. Can men get dermaplaning?
  6. Can you get dermaplaning while pregnant?
  7. Is dermaplaning safe for rosacea?
  8. Can I use retinol before dermaplaning?
  9. Can I do dermaplaning at home?

Is dermaplaning painful?

No, when done properly, dermaplaning is painless. In fact, many patients find this treatment to have a soothing effect as the skin is rhythmically swept in short, gentle strokes. Keep in mind that choosing a licensed provider will ensure your experience is comfortable and the best results are achieved.

Is dermaplaning just shaving?

No, dermaplaning is a deep exfoliation treatment performed by a skilled, licensed professional. The surgical-grade blade removes up to two weeks of dead skin cell buildup along with removing peach fuzz. While shaving can also remove peach fuzz, it will not achieve the level of exfoliation that is experienced with dermaplaning. Note that both methods cut the hair straight across, leaving a blunt edge that may feel sharper at first, but any slight “stubble” you may feel is temporary and not indicative of increased facial hair growth.

Does hair grow back thicker after dermaplaning?

Absolutely not! Like we mentioned in the previous answer, dermaplaning leaves a straight edge on the hair shaft. As it starts to grow back, the hair may temporarily feel thicker because of the blunt tip. It will soften as the hair continues to grow. Dermaplaning does not reach the hair follicle and has no effect on how the hair grows. Your hair will remain the same color and texture it was before it was dermaplaned.

Dermaplaning does not reach the hair follicle and has no effect on how the hair grows.

Can I alternate microdermabrasion and dermaplaning?

You can; just be sure to use the same trusted medical spa provider for all of your skin treatments and follow the recommended intervals between procedures—your skin needs time to renew itself and reap the benefits of treatment. Also note that you’ll see differing results from each as microdermabrasion does not remove vellus hair (peach fuzz), but rather deeply exfoliates with minute abrasions and gentle suction. With the help of your aesthetician, pay attention to the benefits you see from each option so you can make educated choices about which treatment will best serve your skin in any given season.

Can men get dermaplaning?

Yes, men can experience the same benefits from dermaplaning. You should shave any area you would like treated the day of your appointment. If you would like to keep some facial hair, we can exfoliate the forehead, face, and neck areas. Avoid shaving any exfoliated areas for a week after treatment. Dermaplaning will also have no effect on how hair grows back for men.

Can you get dermaplaning while pregnant?

Yes, because it removes only the top layers of skin without the use of chemicals, it is considered safe for pregnancy. Still, it is very important that you disclose your pregnancy to your provider during your consultation so that they can mitigate any unnecessary risks.

Is dermaplaning safe for rosacea?

No, dermaplaning is not the best treatment option for patients with rosacea: the process could further aggravate the skin. If you have inflammatory skin conditions such as rosacea or eczema, or active acne breakouts, dermaplaning may not be the right choice for you. This is another reason why it is so important to find a dermaplaning provider that works under the supervision of a qualified board certified physician. (At Ahava Medpa in Rancho Cucamonga, our skin experts will carefully evaluate your skin and help you determine which treatment options will provide optimal benefits.)

Dermaplaning is not the best treatment option for patients with rosacea, as the process could further aggravate the skin.

Can I use retinol before dermaplaning?

No; we recommend avoiding retinoids 5-7 days prior to and after dermaplaning treatment to avoid over-exfoliating the skin. Over-exfoliation compromises the skin’s natural barrier as sebum is stripped away and cell turnover is accelerated beyond what is healthy.

Can I do dermaplaning at home?

No; the instrument used to exfoliate the skin is essentially a scalpel and thus dermaplaning should only be performed by an experienced professional. If not done properly, cuts, scrapes, inflammation, and scaring pose a considerable risk. Our Ahava Medpa team in Rancho Cucamonga is highly-trained and can be trusted to perform this procedure safely and provide outstanding results.

We are pleased to introduce you to Dr. Emma Ryan, Rancho Cucamonga’s newest cosmetic surgeon! Dr. Ryan is highly skilled in cosmetic procedures with an impressive academic pedigree. Dr. Ryan is also a new mom, and is passionate about helping others feel more confident after the changes that come with childbearing. She offers a range of breast enhancement, body reshaping, and facial rejuvenation procedures.

We sat down with Dr. Ryan to learn about the journey that brought her to the Inland Empire, as well as what patients can expect if you decide to meet with her for your cosmetic surgery consultation.

Why did you become a cosmetic surgeon?

When I was in high school, I had the privilege of shadowing several surgeons in different specialties. I was drawn to cosmetic plastic surgery because I felt it made a huge difference in the confidence and the lives of the patients. In medical school I completed my clerkship in general surgery, and I was hooked on surgery!

“A mommy makeover boosts the confidence of women who have dedicated their lives and bodies to their children…It is very satisfying to see a mother get her dream body after giving so much for her kids.”

I enjoy general surgery, but I chose to pursue cosmetic surgery specifically because the patient population is so rewarding to work with. For the most part, cosmetic surgery patients are healthy, active, and want to improve themselves. They are more driven to exercise, eat healthy, and maintain their results. It is fun to see the transformation in patients and help boost their confidence.

If you had to pick, what is your favorite procedure?

My favorite procedure is abdominoplasty with waist/back liposuction and breast augmentation—or “mommy makeover” as these procedures are often called when performed together. I have seen how this procedure boosts the confidence of women who have dedicated their lives and bodies to their children through childbirth and breastfeeding. It is very satisfying to see a mother get her dream body after giving so much for her kids.

While many cosmetic surgeons specialize in either the face or the body, you are skilled in and enjoy performing procedures both for the face and the breast/body. What is it like working with one area versus the other?

Both areas are rewarding, because each is challenging in its own respect. Facial procedures require finesse, and the goal is to make it appear that the patient has had nothing done. Body procedures are more about big movements and noticeable results. It is nice to be able to perform both.

Do you have any thoughts about women in the field of cosmetic medicine?

I think both men and women can make excellent cosmetic surgeons. Sometimes I have patients tell me they are more comfortable with a female surgeon, due to the sensitive procedures being performed.

“At Inland Cosmetic Surgery, Dr. Haiavy has developed a culture of education and continued learning that I feel everyone benefits from, including both staff and patients.”

This career requires many years of vigorous training, and I believe there is more inherent strain on women training and working in this field due to the challenges of motherhood. The culture of surgical training is definitely changing for the better, however, and there are more women graduating from surgical training now than in the past.

Why did you choose to join Inland Cosmetic Surgery after completing your fellowship here?

During my cosmetic surgery fellowship here at Inland Cosmetic Surgery, I was made to feel like family. The other surgeons, surgical staff, and medical staff were very welcoming and helped me through my training. I enjoy the fast pace of the clinic and OR (operating room), and I enjoy the patients here in Rancho Cucamonga. Dr. Haiavy has developed a culture of education and continued learning that I feel everyone benefits from, including both staff and patients.

Do you have any general advice you’d give to patients who are seeking cosmetic surgery?

Make an appointment and keep an open mind. Research your procedure and bring questions to the consultation. Not every cosmetic surgeon is the same! Surgeons have different training, experience, specialties, and personalities, so make sure you are comfortable with all aspects of the visit before proceeding with surgery.

“Not every surgeon is the same! Surgeons have different training, experience, specialties, and personalities, so make sure you are comfortable with all aspects of the visit before proceeding with surgery.”

If you had some unexpected free time, what’s the first thing you would do with it?

Spend time with my family, and take a weekend trip to the beach!

What are your favorite spots where you’ve traveled or lived?

My favorite spots to which I’ve traveled would be south of France and Spain. I also enjoy vacationing to Hawaii, and traveling back and forth to Phoenix, Arizona where my family lives. I lived in Anchorage, Alaska for several years before medical school, and it was the most beautiful place I’ve spent time.

When it comes to breast implants, misinformation is everywhere. To help you separate fact from fiction, Rancho Cucamonga cosmetic surgeon Dr. Jacob Haiavy is debunking some of the most common breast augmentation myths below. Keep reading to learn why these misconceptions, like that silicone breast implants are unsafe, don’t reflect the reality for the millions of women currently living with breast implants.

Myth: Augmented breasts look fake

Reality: Women approach breast augmentation with a diverse range of aesthetic goals.

It is true that augmented breasts can look dramatic (if you want them to!), but they can also look completely natural. In fact, advancements in breast implant technology have brought us some of the most natural-looking breast implants ever—and women have a huge variety of size, shape, and projection options to ensure they get just the look they want.

While it remains common for women to choose a buxom aesthetic, women are increasingly requesting a natural-looking augmentation with modestly sized implants. Plus, modern silicone gel-filled implants are lightweight and feel more like natural breast tissue, contributing to their natural appearance and feel.

Myth: Women only get breast implants to go bigger

Reality: Breast implants can be used to create a natural look or to restore symmetry.

When it comes to breast augmentation, there is no such thing as one-size-fits-all—and most of our patients simply want to better fill out clothing, appear more feminine, or feel more confident in their own skin (not have Baywatch-style breasts). While size is a big consideration, it’s not the only one. Many patients have an augmentation to improve symmetry or breast shape, enhance their body proportions, or even to correct a defect such as tuberous breasts.

Myth: Silicone-filled breast implants aren’t safe

Reality: Modern silicone breast implants have been extensively redesigned and proven safe for most women. Silicone is also safely used in numerous other types of medical implants.

Modern silicone breast implants are completely different from the versions that were used decades ago: every brand has substantially redesigned their offerings, and all were submitted to extensive multi-year safety studies before achieving FDA approval. In fact, silicone breast implants are among the most highly scrutinized devices in the history of medicine.

Additionally, all currently available silicone implants have resolved the primary concern with past generations of breast implants: they have a cohesive fill that cannot migrate through the body if the implant shell is ruptured. (In the rare case where an implant rupture occurs, the cohesive silicone gel fill will stay within the pocket around the implant until it can be safely removed, and replaced if desired.)

In sum, modern silicone breast implants have an extremely solid safety record and low complication rates. Not only that, they feel more natural, leading to high patient satisfaction. At Inland cosmetic Surgery, our surgeons are some of the few in the world who can place silicone implants through the umbilicus with no scars on the breasts and a very natural look and feel.

Some women still believe they should choose saline implants in the hopes of avoiding silicone, but this is an outdated need. First, choosing saline implants will not help you entirely avoid placing silicone in your body, because silicone material is used for the outer shell of saline-filled implants. Secondly, risks of silicone migration have been resolved with modern cohesive silicone fills, so choosing saline implants for this reason alone is unnecessary.

It is true that some breast implants have recently been recalled due to safety concerns, but the implant fill type was not the issue: it was the textured (instead of smooth) shell. Certain highly textured breast implants were found to be associated with a very rare cancer, breast implant associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma (BIA-ALCL). To avoid this risk, our practice exclusively uses smooth-surfaced implants, which allow us to achieve excellent results for our breast augmentation patients.

Myth: Recovery is difficult

Reality: Most women find recovery to be manageable and usually return to work in less than a week.

This is a matter of opinion, as the initial recovery experience varies quite a bit from person to person; the type of anesthesia used is also a large factor. However, many of our breast augmentation patients return to office jobs within just two to three days of surgery. Healing from any surgical procedure isn’t a walk in the park, but most patients wouldn’t describe their breast augmentation recovery as grueling. Discomfort can be managed with a combination of over-the-counter pain medications, rest, and application of ice packs. Plus, an overwhelming 97% of breast augmentation patients think the surgery and recovery was totally worth it.

Myth: Breast implants only last for 10 years

Reality: There is no need to replace implants every ten years, as implants often last much longer.

This is one of the most common breast implant fallacies. Today, the majority of FDA-approved breast implants come with 10-year warranties that cover implant replacement should something happen with the implant within that time. Yet this does not mean that you need to replace your implants after 10 years. Many patients are still thrilled with their results well after 10 years have passed, and there is no medical reason to replace 10-year-old implants that are otherwise considered to be safe.

That said, you should have your implants checked regularly using MRI or ultrasound imaging and remain open to the possibility of implant replacement surgery down the road. Most of the time, however, patients choose to replace their implants based on changes in their bodies or aesthetic preferences, rather than from any failure of their original implants.

If you’re paying attention to facial rejuvenation options, you may already know that Ultherapy skin tightening can turn back the clock throughout the aging face. This treatment allows us to visualize and target deeper tissues with ultrasound energy, stimulating collagen growth. Because it bypasses your outer layer of skin, Ultherapy requires zero downtime.

But Ultherapy’s magic is not limited to the face! In today’s blog, we’re sharing the 3 additional areas where Ultherapy can turn back time and keep you looking fresh—all with a treatment you can squeeze into your lunch break.

1. The double chin: Ultherapy lifts excess skin & smoothes wrinkles

It may seem that gravity and fat deposits are causing the extra volume below your chin, but for many patients, the “double chin” is caused by skin laxity. Ultherapy treats sagging skin at the foundational level, prompting your body to selectively “heal” deep tissues, rebuilding the collagen and elastin in your skin. In this way, Ultherapy can create a stunning transformation by lifting the skin below the chin and visually emphasizing your natural jawline. The best part? The results appear gradually over the course of 2-3 months, so you will enjoy a dramatic change with a natural outcome that others can’t quite put their finger on.

2. The turkey neck: Ultherapy firms and lifts

Early signs of aging in the neck, which may have you cloaking yourself in scarves and turtlenecks, don’t require surgical intervention. If you are distracted by wrinkles or thinning skin in your neck, Ultherapy can lift and firm your skin to help reverse “turkey neck” before it progresses further. The precise Ultherapy handpiece combined with tissue visualization allows us to customize your neck rejuvenation treatment where you need it most for a natural-looking result—and a serious confidence boost.

3. The décolletage: Ultherapy revitalizes crêpe-like skin

The area from the chin to the top of the breast is delicate and quick to show age with fine lines, thinning skin, wrinkles, and folds—even if you keep your décolletage moisturized and use sun protection.

If your upper chest seems to be giving away your age, skip the over-the-counter topical creams whose results will be subtle at best. Ultherapy is quickly becoming the gold standard option for revitalizing the area. Since Ultherapy promotes collagen and elastin growth, it can turn back time in your décolletage not just by “lifting” the skin, but also by strengthening the skin’s structure. After treatment, the skin appears firmer, more evenly toned, and smoother.

As with Ultherapy in any area, many are happy with their results after just 1 treatment, though repeat treatments may be desirable for upkeep or to take your results even further.

Many patients are happy with their results after just 1 treatment, though repeat treatments may be desirable for upkeep or to take your results even further.

How do I know if Ultherapy is right for me?

If you are ready to see improvement in your decolletage, neck, chin, or face, but you’re not ready for a facelift or neck lift, then you are likely a good candidate for Ultherapy. Many patients like to use Ultherapy as preventative maintenance at a younger age, when skin is just beginning to visibly lose volume. For those who have already undergone lift surgery but want to touch up their results, Ultherapy can enhance and extend the smoothing effects of a surgical lift. And for some, a customized Ultherapy treatment may even prevent the need for surgery later in life.

Choose a cosmetic surgeon with extensive experience using Ultherapy for nonsurgical lifting and skin tightening, and they can help you determine the most effective treatment plan for your needs and your lifestyle. An experienced cosmetic surgeon should lay all of your options on the table so that, together, you can choose the best treatment for your anti-aging goals.

“Listen to your gut.” “You are what you eat.” You’ve likely heard these expressions your whole life, but they may be more true than you ever realized. Until recently, the brain and digestive tract were considered separate physiological entities, operating independently of one another. But within the past few years, researchers have begun to make the connection between mental health and gut health.

Today we’ll examine how the brain and gut are related, and how you can optimize your gut’s microbiome to improve your mental and physical wellbeing.

What is the gut microbiome?

Your gut microbiome includes everything from your mouth to your colon, including your stomach, small and large intestines, and the thousands of species of microbes—bacteria, fungi, viruses, and cells—that live within these organs. (Fun fact: the amount of bacterial DNA in our bodies is 10 times greater than our own DNA!) A number of factors including diet, environment, and physical & mental health all influence, and are influenced by, our gut microbiome.

The relationship between gut health and mental health

Mental health disorders are on the rise. According to the CDC, more than one-third of Americans suffer from affective mental health disorders, including anxiety and depression. Between 2008 and 2017, the number of young adults who experienced serious psychological distress increased by a staggering 71%.

Simultaneously, obesity, diabetes, and heart disease have all increased dramatically over the past few decades as nutritious whole foods have been replaced with ultra-processed foods high in saturated fats and sugars.

Noting the synchronicity of these two seemingly unrelated trends, researchers are now making the connection between increased rates of mental health concerns and poor nutrition. In fact, many scientists now refer to the gut as a “second brain,” capable of influencing everything from mood to obesity. For example, people with irritable bowel syndrome are often depressed, people on the autism spectrum tend to experience digestive problems, and people with Parkinson’s disease are prone to constipation, according to Science Magazine.

The gut-brain axis: two-way communication

The gut communicates with the central nervous system (CNS) through a biochemical process known as the gut-brain axis. Since this communication is bidirectional (it goes both ways), not only can our gut health influence our mental health, but our mental health can influence our gut health. When you feel stress or anxiety in your stomach, this is the result of the gut-brain axis: your GI tract is experiencing inflammation due to signals sent there from your brain.

Mental health is influenced by the gut

A healthy gut microbiome is essential for your body to properly absorb nutrients and convert them into molecules that are critical for your overall health and wellbeing. Here are 3 molecules essential for brain health that your body gets from food:

  1. Tryptophan. Tryptophan is an amino acid found in foods including turkey, eggs, and chia seeds. Your body converts tryptophan into 2 key neurotransmitters: serotonin and melatonin. Simply put, serotonin is responsible for helping you feel happy, while melatonin helps you sleep. Without proper serotonin and melatonin levels in your brain, you’re more likely to be stressed out, fatigued, irritable, and depressed.
  2. Tyrosine. Your body converts tyrosine, an amino acid found in foods such as almonds, lentils, seeds, and edamame, into dopamine and epinephrine. Dopamine is a neurotransmitter that helps regulate mood and energy. Epinephrine, known more commonly as adrenaline, is the chemical responsible for our “fight or flight” instinct. A lack of tyrosine is often associated with lethargy, low motivation, and slow responsiveness.
  3. Indole-3-lactic acid. Indole-3-lactic acid (ILA) is an acid found in fermented foods like pickles, kimchi, sauerkraut, and nattō, and is converted into indole-3-propionic acid (IPA) in the gut. As one of the strongest antioxidants in the body, IPA helps neutralize free radicals that can cause tissue damage, premature aging, stomach and bowel cancers, and psychiatric disorders.

Why is good gut health dependent on eating healthy foods?

Eating healthily not only helps ensure your body gets the nutrients it needs to protect itself from illness and perform optimally, but it also helps your gut maintain a healthy microbiome. If your gut microbiome isn’t healthy, your body won’t be able to digest nutrients properly, creating a whole host of problems.

You can condition your gut microbiome

Thankfully, our gut microbiomes aren’t set in stone. By eating certain foods, you can actually condition your gut to produce the microbes needed to digest these foods. If, for example, you only eat foods that are high in fat, your gut bacteria that are responsible for breaking down fat will outcompete with other, more beneficial, bacteria. But, if you adopt a whole foods diet including plenty of vegetables, your gut microbes will adapt to digest these foods and even begin to crave them. According to a review in Clinics and Practice, diet alterations can have a significant impact on your gut microbiome in as little as 24 hours.

Making dietary changes can have a significant impact on your gut microbiome in as little as 24 hours.

A healthy gut starts with a diverse diet

Consuming a wide array of foods is important for cultivating a healthy gut microbiome. A study published in the journal Aging showed that eating a varied diet is associated with increased energy, healthy immune functioning, better mental clarity, and improved emotional wellbeing. A typical American diet, on the other hand, has been linked to obesity, type 2 diabetes, Alzheimer’s, and Parkinson’s.

A reduction in microbial diversity and the loss of beneficial bacteria can also cause leaky gut syndrome, a phenomenon where gut microbes and undigested food particles can leak through the intestines and into the bloodstream. Leaky gut syndrome has been associated with inflammatory bowel disease, diabetes, and asthma, as well as depression, anxiety, and autism.

What should you eat for a healthy gut microbiome?

So, you want to feed your gut’s microbiota healthy nutrients for optimal brain functioning—but what should you eat? Start with this short list:

Fruits and veggies

Emerging research supports that eating a variety of fruits and vegetables can provide your gut with most of the nutrients it needs to support a healthy microbiome. Apples, berries, grapes, and onions all contain phytonutrients that may increase serotonin and dopamine in the brain. So while we don’t recommend discontinuing any prescription medications, eating a variety of fruits and veggies every day can have significant improvements on your mental and emotional wellbeing.

Eating a variety of fruits and veggies every day can have significant improvements on your mental and emotional wellbeing.

Fiber

Eating foods that are high in fiber helps to assure you’re eating a diverse diet, since most whole foods contain high levels of fiber. Unfortunately in the U.S., only 1 in 20 people consume the daily recommended amount of fiber. Researchers have found that eating more fiber is associated with higher levels of beneficial bacteria in the gut responsible for breaking down fiber. When these bacteria digest fiber, they produce short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), which have anti-inflammatory properties and are capable of reducing insulin sensitivity and appetite. Whole grains, beans, cruciferous vegetables, and dried fruit are all high-fiber foods.

Probiotic-rich foods

According to the Clinics and Practice review, probiotics have the ability to restore normal microbial balance and reduce inflammation in the GI tract. Because of this calming effect on the gut, researchers are interested in the potential role probiotics may have in the treatment and prevention of anxiety and depression. Though it doesn’t confirm whether or not probiotics can be used to treat these psychological disorders, a randomized controlled study published in the journal Brain, Behavior, and Immunity found that they may help reduce negative thoughts associated with feelings of sadness.

Until more research is published showing causation between probiotics and improved mental health, we don’t recommend relying on probiotics alone to treat any mental health disorders. That said, consuming probiotic-rich foods, like kimchi, kombucha, kefir, and nattō, introduces plenty of beneficial bacteria to your gut microbiome and is good for your overall health (plus, they’re super tasty!).

Omega-3 fatty acids

Omega-3 fatty acids are a type of polyunsaturated fat that can increase good bacteria in the gut and have anti-inflammatory effects in the body. Health experts have suggested that omega-3s may help reduce the risk of depression and protect against cognitive decline in the elderly. Omega-3 can be found in foods such as walnuts, flax seeds, and oily fish.

Please note: Be sure to talk to your doctor before taking any new supplements or making any significant dietary changes. Everyone’s bodies (and guts) are different, therefore not all foods are beneficial to all people.
